About me...

Hi Everyone,

I'm Alex White and i'm a movie maker based in Exeter. I say movie as I've never shot on film but would like to at some point but it's getting increasingly more unlikely! Having always wanted to make movies I went to university to do a BSc, In Multimedia but then got distracted by real life, jobs and such!

Then in March 07 I went on the Guerilla film makers master class at Ealing Studio run by Chris Jones author of the Guerilla Film Makers Hand book series. He told us all to go out and be creative by working on other peoples films and doing your own.

Since then I've...

  • Sound and Production Assistant on The Forewarning the first feature film shot in Exeter directed by Andy Robinson
  • Wrote produced and directed my first film Deadly Illusions
  • Did sound, light and stills for two bursary films at the Phoenix -
  • Aeroplane by Toby De Burgh and Untitled Dystopia by Martin Lejeune
  • Wrote produced and directed an odd little tale called In the Garden of Terrible Delights .
  • I'm also one of MANY associate producers who funded the Chris Jones film Gone Fishing

I'm gearing up for the summer's shooting so I'll leave you with a few tips that help me!

    1) Be organised!! I can't tell you how much time you'll save with a notepad and pen before and after the shoot. Tell everyone whats, happening, when and where, during the shoot, lable your tapes and keep a track of the takes you like.

    2) Don't bother with high end HD unless your target is a retail blu-ray release. I've shot DVCPro HD and HDV and comparing the two, the trade off in inperceptable picture quality is well worth the time and money you'll save by using the semi-pro gear.

    3) Know your stuff. F-stops, shutter speeds, focal distance etc are still relevant just as much as bitstreams and codecs. If you know how your picture is made up and how it is captured, you'll be on a winner!

One film maker will go on to win the Grand Prize and up to £30,000 in funding for their next film, with the UK Film Council and Virgin Media. The favourite film of our registered Critics will be awarded the People's Choice.

Guys, all the best and if you win, you know where to get crew for your big (low budget) feature!!

Shooting Deadly Illusions - Conclusion

When you engage in a project like this, you have to lead in order to get the project finished but make no mistake, you maybe the director, but you're only as good as your crew! So thank you to all the people who made Deadly Illusions happen. I don't hate my first movie even when I'm suppose to! I'm pleased with the feedback after all when a complete stranger on Vimeo simply says they enjoyed it, I think that's great! So to sum it all up right or wrong here are some of the things I took away f

Shooting Deadly Illusions - Part Three

With only six weeks to the premier which had been announced before we started shooting, I had lots to do but consoled myself that I had been told that a month was enough time to edit a short movie. Then the technical issues reared their ugly head - after a week of trying to look at the Maxtor portable hard disk with the footage on, I had remembered that windows doesn't read a FAT32 file partitions. This meant that I needed an Apple Mac or find a program to read the Mac formatted data which I

Shooting Deadly Illusions - Part Two

We got to the theatre and unloaded loads of kit an props and began! One of the first problems we hit on the day was my inexperience, the first scene we shot was number two in the script, which was the magician and assistant talking face to face. Hey! I thought we'll knock this out in an hour! Not a chance!! My DP told me we needed to do wide shots for establishing and cut aways. I was like "Why?" To me, camera one was over the shoulder of the magician and camera two was over the assistants sh
